Tarana Burke is Here to Support Survivors by Saying “Me Too”
“Me too” rings loud and clear all around the world. And it’s all because of Tarana Burke, a black woman from New York City. She went on to found Just Be Inc. in 2006, whose mission was “focused on the health, well-being, and wholeness of young women of color.”
Ten years prior, Burke was speaking to a 13-year old girl who had been sexually abused by her mom’s boyfriend.
Burke looked for resources and funding that she didn’t have during that time to begin the movement that we now know as “me too.” She said, “I didn’t have a response or a way to help her in that moment, and I couldn’t even say ‘me too.’ ”
The hashtag #MeToo blew up after actress Alyssa Milano used it in a tweet at the “suggestion of a friend.” It was a complex time for Burke because she wasn’t credited in the tweet nor did she ever feel like she had support from white feminists in the first place. But days later, Milano gave credit where credit was due on Good Morning America.
Not only did Milano credit Burke in her hard work, she would help amplify the the decades Burke spent on one mission: supporting survivors.
While the two words did spread like wildfire through Hollywood, social media, and all over the world. It’s more than that. Burke told CNN, "It’s not about a viral campaign for me, it’s about a movement... On one side, it's a bold declarative statement that 'I'm not ashamed' and 'I'm not alone.' On the other side, it's a statement from survivor to survivor that says 'I see you, I hear you, I understand you and I'm here for you or I get it.'"
